Mad About Plaid

Nov 27, 2013

I'm falling for plaid this season. And it's quite a recent love affair because up until now, I've always associated plaid with prep school uniforms. I don't know if it's the wide selection available this fall or simply that my taste is evolving but one thing for sure, I am definitively mad for plaid! Now, here are some effortless chic ways to style the trend without looking like a school girl:

When I caught a glimpse of these fabulous images shot by Mario Testino for Vogue China, my heart skipped a beat. From the feminine posture, the lovely hats, the nipped waists, the long leather gloves, the classic bags and the amazing tailoring, is there anything more elegant than a lady who pays great attention to details?

Do you have a favourite outfit? I just adore how model Sui He is dressed with this undeniably chic green skirt suit in the last photograph. She reminds me of a mysterious Hitchcock heroin. Simply divine!

Lady Crush: Léa Seydoux

Nov 21, 2013

I have a new girl crush, her name is Léa Seydoux. She is the fascinating French actress who recently won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the lesbian romance, Blue is the Warmest Color. You should have seen the impressive Louis Vuitton back bow dress she wore on the Cannes red carpet, it was quite something. This lady definitively knows how to dress her curvaceous figure.

While you might not be familiar with her name, I'm sure you have seen her face in a magazine. Aside from being a versatile actress, Lea is also the face of Prada's Candy fragrance and recently appeared in the latest Rag & Bone ad campaign.

I guess it's her raw talent and her unconventional beauty that makes me irresistibly drawn to her. Although she is not even thirty, she has worked with great directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Woody Allen and Ridley Scott just to name a few. And while some actresses tend to play the same type of character, Lea seems to enjoy exploring the many and mysterious sides of the female mind.

If you have never seen her on screen, I highly recommend you start with Farewell, My Queen. This French movie takes place on the eve of the French Revolution and depicts the last days of Marie Antoinette through the eyes of her young servant, Sidonie Laborde, played by Seydoux. I have a major thing for costume drama, but in this particular case, all eyes are not on the lavish costumes but rather on the candid and loyal Sidonie.

YellowKorner: A Cosy Boutique For Photography Lovers

L'élégance à la française, Boris Lipnitzki

If you like photography as much as I do, you will be thrilled with my latest discovery. It's called Yellow Korner and it's not your typical photo gallery. First established in Paris in 2006, this gallery-boutique is filled with around 2000 breathtaking photographs on different themes such as urban life, travel, fashion, music, nature, landscape, celebrities and many more.

Why is this gallery so different? Instead of selling one single print at a high selling price, Yellow Korner offers limited-edition photographic prints, which are numbered and sold at starting price of $63 to $3,500. The pictures are all taken by a roster of 250 independent photographers from around the world. That is perhaps why you feel like you have been traveling everywhere after your first visit to the store.

What I find very interesting about their concept is that you can choose from various sizes, not to forget that the final prints can be purchased on a variety of finishes such as plexiglas or wood frames. It's up to you to decide! The only problem will be to narrow down your selection considering the fact that they have so many mind-blowing images in their inventory. I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you. Which one would you pick?

Yellow Korner is located on 1328 Ste-Catherine West in Montréal

Le Blush Crème De Chanel

Nov 13, 2013

I have never been quite fond of cream blushes. Their staying power haven't been very impressive on my combination skin. That's until I tried and got hooked on Le blush crème, a new collection of cream blushes launched by Chanel. I was looking for a nice everyday pink blush and discovered Révélation (63), a warm peachy pink shade. It has a creamy and satiny texture that can be easily applied by softly patting with fingers. Once on the cheeks, the oil-free formula dries down to a beautiful semi-matte finish, leaving a natural healthy glow. During the day, I also tend to reach for the tiny black box and apply the blush on my lips, either alone or under a clear gloss. It's a chic multitasker.

Do you have a favorite cream blush?

Isabel Marant For H&M: My Top Two Picks

Nov 10, 2013

On November 14th, the highly anticipated Isabel Marant collaboration for H&M will hit the stores everywhere around the world. Like many admirers of the Parisian designer, it's with utter excitement that I have perused the lookbook from the rocker chic collection, which appears to be pretty true to her bohemian aesthetic. As we are only allowed two picks during the much-hyped sale event, here are the two items I am hoping to get my hands on: a chic silk party dress ($129) and a pair of sequin embellished heels ($199). Are you ready for a fashion riot?

Happy shopping everyone!

Melissa Nepton For Target: An Urban Capsule Collection

Nov 8, 2013
Designer Mélissa Nepton (7th from the left) at the unveiling of her capsule collection for Target

My Interview With Fashion Designer Mélissa Nepton
Mélissa Nepton is THE name on every fashionista's lips these days in Montreal. The fashion designer specialized in modern ready-to-wear and recipient of the Target Emerging Designer Award unveiled her capsule collection last night in front of a mesmerized audience. Her exclusive collection designed for Target in Québec available on December 8th will be comprised of fifteen pieces ranging from $29,99 to $69,99. Exciting, isn't!

That is an impressive accomplishment for the young woman who has had a steadfast road to fashion perfection. Mélissa was introduced to fashion at a very young age while watching her mother create theatre costumes and children's clothes. She soon understood that fabrics were creative tools she wanted to explore. That is how she went on to complete the renowned fashion program at Marie-Victorin and to study at Montreal's École supérieure de mode and also at École Nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris.

Back in Montreal, Mélissa furthered her understanding of the industry's business side by working for the Marie-Claire Group. Her dream of creating her own label came true when she was casted in the reality TV show La Collection, Québec's version of Project Runway. She then established her eponymous label, followed by her first collection at Montreal's Fashion Week in 2009.

I have recently had the pleasure of meeting her. Here are some interesting things I have learned about her personality:

What are your wardrobe must have?
Definitively leggings & tunic!

A few words to describe your style:
Fluidity, femininity, practicality and comfort.

Who is the Mélissa Nepton woman?
A professional woman who cares about elegance but will not sacrifice her comfort.

Who are your favorite designers?
Philip Lim, Alexander Wang and Chloé

What food do you usually crave the most?
That's easy, anything with chocolate! I particularly enjoy going to Juliette & Chocolat, they have so many different ways to enjoy chocolate. It's a great place to satisfy all my chocolate cravings.

Which qualities do you look for in a friend?
Confidence and smile. I like to be surrounded by strong personalities and genuinely happy people. I find it quite inspiring to have self-confident friends and loved ones in my life.

What is your ultimate indulgence?
Doing nothing! Since I am so busy all the time, I find it such a luxury when I allow myself to take time for myself. It's rather difficult to take some alone time, but when I manage to unplug the computer and turn off the phone, it's what I called a blissful moment. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen often.

Where would you like to go on your next trip?
I have never had the chance to visit the far East. I would really enjoy to travel to India and Japan. I am curious to discover their culture, their delicious culinary traditions, their breathtaking landscape and of course, their fashion.

What are you most grateful for in life?
I am extremely grateful for having been able to carry a baby (Olivia!). Bringing new life to the world is the greatest honor and it's also a very humbling experience. I feel very privileged because I know how difficult it is for so many women to get pregnant. I am fully aware of all the efforts some women got through just to try to get pregnant while others aren't simply unable to conceive. That's why I feel so blessed.

What was you inspiration for the capsule collection for Target?
I created this collection by keeping in mind what urban, modern women look for: style, accessible sophistication and comfort. My collaboration with Target will hopefully give a more diverse group of women access to the collection. I hope that it will be a nice addition to their closets. For me, fashion is expression of confidence and femininity that should be rooted in comfort and practicality.

Mélissa Nepton (in the middle) thrilled to be unveiling her capsule collection for Target

Here are some of my favourite pieces from her upcoming collection:

Mélissa Nepton's iconic fox on a blouse with black piping
Black holiday dress with gold jacquard and faux leather
Floral print crewneck sweatshirt
White and black trimmed shirt and leggings with geo patterned sides

What A Little Hermès Can Do

Nov 7, 2013

The leaves are falling down one by one, the cold weather is slowly settling in. It's the time of year where we put our leather gloves back on and wrap a warm scarf around our neck.

While the knit eternity scarf trend is still going strong, I am thrilled to be able to wear my new carré Hermès a few times before the big chill. I find its vermilion hue so vibrant and elegant compared to the many grey shades we tend to see in November. Named "L'instruction du Roy", this heavily weaved scarf features a geometric arrangement of horse bridle, a mythic symbol for the iconic brand who first introduced their carré de soie in 1937.

Who doesn't enjoy a great classic piece? I certainly do.

My Chat With Bianca Gervais

Nov 2, 2013

Yesterday, I attended the 'Weekend de toute beauté', a big beauty celebration for women, which is taking place until Sunday at the Montreal Palais des Congrès. Sponsored by Lise Watier, this glamorous event is for all women who want to stay up to date on the latest beauty and fashion trends. Here are some of the exhibitors not be missed: Rudsak, Matt & Natt, Martin Lim, Michel Desjardins, Travis Taddeo, Femme de carrière, Bijoux Caroline Néron, Rusk, China Glaze, Zorah Biocosmétiques and many more!

I had the pleasure of meeting actress Bianca Gervais, spokesperson of the event, who candidly answered a few questions I had for her:

Pearls & Caramel: Why have you accepted to become the ambassador of the 'Weekend de toute beauté'?
Bianca Gervais: When Chantal Neveu (the event organizer) explained that she wanted to put together a chic event where beauty and fashion would meet under the same roof and that it would be  an opportunity for women to meet with industry experts and discover the latest trends, I felt right at home. That is exactly the type of event I would have enjoyed attending with my girlfriends. I am passionate about beauty, I always like to try on new body and face cream and find out new beauty tricks. I also love fashion as well as shopping and I am so thrilled to be part of such a cool event.

P&C: What are your three beauty must have?
B.G.: I just adore the Body Soufflé from Montreal-based company Moroccanoil. It's like whipped cream for your body, it's just amazing! Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night just to smell its fabulous fragrance. I am also quite fond of all MAC lipsticks. They have such beautiful colors and their texture is so silky on the lips, it's never drying. I am blessed in that regard because it is usually what we use on tv set. And recently, as I was running errands at a drugstore, I discovered a pretty neat and affordable pink blush from Bourjois. It gives a nice pop of colour while adding a nice natural glow. I just love it so much!

P&C: Which beauty tip have you learned from your mother?
B.G. : My mother is a savvy shopper when it comes to beauty. Before purchasing a new cream, she will ask for a sample and try it on the right side of her face while trying another one on the left side. She will then wait until the end of the day in order to analyze the effect the product has on her skin. In other terms, my mother taught me to experiment, to read a lot and to ask lots of questions before purchasing new skincare products.

P&C: Is there a fashion trend you really like wearing this season?
B.G.: Tartan (as she is showing me her tartan vest)! An historian recently told me that tartan is doing a major comeback this fall because we are longing for authenticity nowadays. That is also why brown, burgundy and green forest are big this season. Interesting isn't? I think I am having a grunge moment right now with the tartan trend. I am channeling my inner Kurt Cobain, I just love it!

P&C: Are you more high heels or ballerinas?
B.G.: Definitively ballerinas! But I also love wearing my Doc Martens (pointing at her feet). My mother always refused to buy me a pair when I was younger so at 28, I finally bought myself a pair and I am so pleased!

P&C: Who are your style icons?
B.G.: In terms of fashion, I like clean lines, I am all for simplicity paired with elegance. I really like Gwyneth Palthrow's style, I find her to be very natural and pretty. I obviously like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, two exquisite style icons from another era. And to that, I would also add my mother. She looks fabulous for her age, she takes great care of her skin and herself in general. These days, there is so much pressure on women to look younger and dress younger, but in the end it all of this can be very deceitful. My mother, on the other hand, knows how to be elegant while dressing her age. She is aging very gracefully and that is why she is such a positive role model for me.

P&C.: What are your top 3 exhibitors to see at the 'Weekend de toute beauté'?
B.G.: There is Voyou, an audacious street wear company, which is run by a 28-year-old girl, basically my own age.  Also, the leather good company Matt and Natt has created a limited-edition collection for the event, which is very exciting. I love fashion made in Quebec, I find our designers so creative and talented, it's difficult to name just a few of our exhibitors. In terms of beauty, I am so proud that Lise Watier is involved with the event, knowing how women here love and respect the brand and also knowing the level of quality the company has achieved years after years.

To meet Bianca Gervais, drink some bubbly, get a fresh manicure, a massage, try on some chocolate, some jewelry or to get a styling consultation, head down to Palais des Congrès to the first edition of the 'Weekend de toute beauté'!
