An Apple A Day Keeps Dull Skin Away

A review of SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF
I am the kind of gal who likes to explore when it comes to makeup because I believe it is a great opportunity to be creative and let my imagination run wild (well maybe not as wild as KISS!!). I see the world of cosmetics as a playground with beautiful shades, seductive textures and inventive products allowing me to accentuate my features as I please.

I am equally passionate about makeup as I am for skincare but I also tend to consider skincare as something highly serious. In fact, I tend to be very disciplined by sticking to the skincare routine I have established in my early twenties. And as much as I like to stay updated about the latest trends and skincare innovations, I am very careful when it comes to introducing a new product to my routine. But every now and then, I feel the need to try something different, usually when there is a brand new ingredient, a revamped formulation or simply another kind of product on the market. That is exactly what happened to me lately. Let me explain...

Over the past few years, I have tried various vitamin C products in a quest to achieve brighter and more radiant skin. But up to this day, I could not really grasp the hype behind this cult ingredient. That is when I discovered SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF, a water-based vitamin C serum, which had many promising claims.

Developed over five years of extensive research, this broad-spectrum treatment is filled with antioxidants to protect the skin cells from free radicals and photodamage that has already occurred. It is precisely made of 10% vitamin C, 0.5% of ferulic acid and 2% of phloretin, the latter being THE secret weapon of this serum. Phloretin is in fact a molecule derived from the bark of apple trees, which have been found to help skin cells regenerate.

Filled with scientific information, I decided to explore on my own and test the benefits of this highly praised beauty elixir. I started to use a few drops of the liquid formulation in the morning on my clean face, neck and hands. I then let it sink in for a minute before applying sunscreen. It gets absorbed very well and dries out to a satin texture. It is important to mention that using a sunscreen following this type of product is crucial because an antioxidant serum doesn't protect the skin from the sun's rays.

After having used this product for six weeks, I am delighted to report that I have noticed a reduction of sun spots on top of my cheeks as well as less broken capillaries around my nose. I have far less redness and blotchiness than before. As a result, my skin is now glowing and my complexion is more even than before. As a bonus, I have started to use a lot less foundation than I used to because I don't feel the need to conceal my skin anymore.

At $150 CAD a bottle, this powerful formulation is certainly not the type of product you buy on a whim but considering that I have seen more palpable results with this serum than with any other vitamin C products, it is well worth the investment.

Emerald Green Fever

Dec 17, 2012

The Pantone Color Institute has recently announced that emerald will be the official colors of 2013. After an array of bright color like Tangerine Tango, Honeysuckle, Turquoise and Mimosa, I am eager to embrace this deep and mysterious green. According to the gods of color, emerald is described as "a color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony". Isn't that promising! Are you ready for this luscious and lively green?

Don't You Wish Everyday Was Christmas?

Chanel Éclats du soir, 2012 Holiday Collection

I am always curious to discover the special touch Chanel has planned for the holiday season. According to their latest collection entitled Éclats du soir, the upcoming holidays will be particularly sparkly and chic. Created by Peter Philips, Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, the 2012 Christmas Collection focuses on gold tones, glittering soft pink and beige shades as well as deep burgundy hues. Isn't it a ravishing proposition?

When I first saw this festive collection, my eyes were immediately drawn to the gorgeous embossed eye palette named Harmonie du soir. Not only is the color combination from this quad impeccable, but each eyeshadow is round and quilted as a reminiscence of the Chanel jacket button. What a stylish detail! I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the gold, taupe, violet plum and pink eyeshadows comprised in this palette are buttery soft and highly pigmented. I have the strong impression that Chanel has greatly improved the formulation of their eye powders. I now wonder how I will manage to use this pretty palette. I might end up keeping it as a collector's item, wouldn't you do the same?

Did the collection also caught your attention?

Christmas Sugar Cookies

Dec 7, 2012

Cookie cutters, checked. Rolling pin, checked. Food colouring, checked. Sugar cookies, here I come!

Christmas wouldn't be complete without delicious and beautifully iced cookies, don't you think? Here is the easy recipe I have been making for quite a while:

For cookies
2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 cup of butter, softened
1 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoon of milk (or almond milk)
1/2 tablespoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

For lemon icing
1 cup of powdered sugar
2 tablespoon of lemon
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1. In a large bowl, beat butter with sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg, vanilla and milk. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Cover dough with plastic and refrigerate for at least an hour.

2. Pre-heat oven at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Place cookies on baking sheet 1 in. apart. Bake 10 to 15 minutes, until the edges turn golden. Cool down completely.

3. Prepare the icing by combining sugar, lemon and vanilla extract until smooth. To achieve the desired icing color, I like to use this very helpful guide put together by the Food Network Magazine (May 2012 issue):

Happy baking!

The Art Of Glamour by Mario Testino

Dec 4, 2012

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is currently featuring the glamorous work of portrait and fashion photographer Mario Testino. Entitled Mario Testino: In Your Face, the career retrospective honors the talent of the Peruvian-born jet-setter and includes 125 famous pictures of celebrities and dignitaries.

For the occasion, I have gathered here some candid shots and stunning portraits of the ever stylish Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, Laetitia Casta, Charlotte Casiraghi, Nathalie Portman, Lady Di and Tina Fey. I have also included an interesting behind-the-scenes film put together by the MFA to document the creative process leading to the exhibition. Enjoy!
