Opulent Cabochon Rings

Nov 28, 2012
Boucheron

Sometimes all a woman wants is to be surrounded by beauty, and beautiful things, to be inspired in life. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it can also be seen on the fingers of people with exquisite taste and in the shape of bold cabochon rings.

Here are some splendid cabochons that would have a made ostentatious kings quite envious. Fancy anything you like?

I'm Beyond Mad!

Nov 26, 2012

Over the weekend, I jumped on the Mad Men 5 bandwagon. I was so thrilled to be reunited with my favorite characters (and cast) on TV, to find out what the future would hold for Sterling Cooper Drapper Pryce and to discover what the talented costume designer Janie Bryant had in store for the ladies this season.

And most importantly, I was delighted to see that I am more then ever fascinated by Joan's elegance and cleverness as I am smitten by Roger's charm and debonair attitude.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes, which I managed to write down as I was sipping martinis and watching the episodes one after the other.

Megan to Don: "Don, I love you. You are everything I'll hoped you'd be".

Glen: "How's the city?"
Sally: "Dirty."

Roger: "Who knows why people in history did good things. For all we know, Jesus was trying to get the loaves and fishes account."

Mona: "I thought you had married Jane because I had gotten old, and then I realized it's because you had."

Roger (after Don receives a Steinway walking stick for his birthday): You could stick it up your ass and have a concert."

Betty: "It's nice to be put through the ringer and find out...I'm just fat."

Ken: "I only do it because my wife likes it".
Roger: "Well my wife likes fur, but you don't see me growing a tail".

Joan: "I know a girl who had your job and ended up with everything."

Don to Megan: "You wanna be somebody's discovery, not somebody's wife."

Marie Calvet to Megan: "You are an ungrateful little bitch. Thank god my children aren't my whole life".

Ainsi Va La Vie!

Call me

If you are wondering what to do in Montreal on this cold November day, I have a colorful suggestion for you. There is a fabulous exhibition of painter Rock Therrien happening until tomorrow at Galerie Saint-Dizier in Old Montreal. Self-taught, this young artist is recognizable for creating larger sized paintings depicting rounded characters usually from another era. I have gathered here some old and recent favorites from his whimsical collection:

Mini Lemon Polenta Cakes

Nov 22, 2012

Ever since my sister had difficulty to tolerate gluten, I have started exploring the wonderful world of gluten-free cooking and baking. While on the other side of the fence, I have come to discover that there are no reason to be miserable when eating gluten-free meals. Here's a sweet example of how to have your cake and eat it too!

This is a nice (and rich) cake recipe which I recently made for my dear sister. I adore everything lemon, so I figured out a way to incorporate my favorite ingredient into another scrumptious dessert. I must confess that there are quite many steps but I reassure you, they are very straightforward. Happy baking!

Ingredients
For the cakes:
1 1/4 cup of fine polenta (yellow cornmeal)
1 1/4 cup of shredded coconut
1 1/4 cup of ground almonds
1 tablespoon of baking soda
1 cup of butter, soften
1 cup of sugar
4 eggs
Grated rind of 3 lemons
Juice of 2 lemons

For lemon icing:
Juice of one lemon
1 cup of icing sugar
1 tablespoon of water

Pre-heat the oven at 325 degrees F (170 degrees C). Grease muffin pan or mini-round cake pan.

Blend together polenta, coconut, ground almond, baking soda, lemon rind and set aside. Beat butter and sugar until pale and light. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Fold in dry ingredients and lemon juice until fully combined.

Spoon mixture into muffin pan until 3/4 full. Bake for thirty minutes or until golden. Allow the cakes to cool in the pan.

For the icing:
At medium heat, mix in sugar, water and lemon until the sugar is completely dissolved. It should look like a thick white syrup.

Once the cakes have cooled down completely, remove from the pan onto a service plate. Pour the icing on the cakes with a spoon and add some pistachios to make it pretty.

Sumptuous Marion

Nov 20, 2012

Marion Cotillard, Marchesa and vibrant oxblood, what else do you need? You already knew that I have a girl crush on Marion Cotillard. Well, I think this photograph of Ben Hasset for Harper's Bazaar UK might just be my favorite of her lately. Don't you agree?

Blue Monday

Nov 19, 2012

It's the season to be blue and it's far from being sad news! Indeed Olympian blue, Pantone 19-4056 to be precise, brings a vibrant energy to our dark world this fall. Just think blue mascara and dashing blue looks at at Stella McCartney, sumptuous blue dresses at Monique Lhullier, bright blue eyeshadow at Anna Sui and, of course the very chic Chanel Le Vernis Bleu Rebel. It makes no doubt, the blue stars are aligned in the sky.

Stella McCartney, Fall 2012
Anna Sui, Fall 2012

With all the creative ways to sports this exuberant color this season, I must confess that my favorite is certainly to opt for bold heels since they add instant awesomeness to any outfit. And with such fabulous blue options out there, you'll have no more reason to wear boring dark shoes.

Vintage Torture

Nov 16, 2012

When we think about the glamorous silhouettes of the 1940s, we usually picture tailored dresses, cinched waists, classic makeup, soft curls and feminine accessories. But we often forget the ingenious corsets that were used to accentuate the hourglass figure. Here are some delightful illustrations of seriously chic undergarments. A constraining, yet timeless elegance.

Aren't you glad comfort can also be stylish nowadays?

Campari-Soda Anyone?

Nov 14, 2012

I have always enjoyed Campari for its bold bitterness and dark ruby color. But I might just have found another reason to appreciate this sophisticated Italian aperitivo even more.

In fact, today the Milan-based Campari Group released images of their 2013 calendar entitled "Kiss superstitions goodbye". After Milla Jovovich, Salma Hayek and Eva Mendes, it is the Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz who is adorning the pages of the famous calendar. Shot by renowned fashion photographer Kristian Schuller, the images are chic and glamorous as Cruz appears dressed in crimson red outfits from prestigious fashion houses including Ferragamo, Monique Lhullier and Vivienne Westwood.

Campari-soda anyone?

Next time you drink a Campari cocktail, why not remember this fabulous assortment of dresses and heels that were used during the photoshoot? Isn't that ravishing?

Traveling In Style

Nov 12, 2012

"The camera can be the most deadly weapon since the assassin's bullet. Or it can be the lotion of the heart.
Norman Parkinson

I adore people, and often artists, who manage to express their sense of humor through their work because I find that it reflects their humanity. That is why today I decided to share my admiration for British photographer Norman Parkinson.

Long before the supermodel era, Mr. Parkinson lead the way to another form of fashion photography. Trained as a portrait photographer, he is mostly recognized for his contribution to publications such as Vogue, Life, Town & Country and Harper's Bazaar in the 1940 and 1950. It is during that period that he developed a new aesthetic by capturing his models in creative environments, moving away from the rigid setting created by his predecessors. Not only did Norman Parkinson enjoy taking pictures outside, he also pioneered the concept of shooting fashion in exotic places. Here are a few of his playful, yet very elegant photographs. I hope you'll find them as whimsical as I do.

Chanel Coco Noir: A Venetian Affair

"Before me, no one would have dare dress in black
Gabrielle Chanel

Following the path of the exquisite Coco and Coco Mademoiselle, la Maison Chanel is introducing a new fragrance this season: Coco Noir. While the first two perfumes exemplified the chic Parisian lifestyle, Coco Noir is an homage to Chanel's dazzling adventure in Venice. It is there in 1919, that Coco Chanel found solace after the death of her lover, Boy Capel. In the darkness of the night, Chanel discovered the vibrant and mysterious energy of the baroque city, which deeply inspired her work and her life.

With its classic, yet very elegant black and gold bottle, Coco Noir captures the essence of this distant and glamorous era. Created by Chanel Perfumers Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake, this new scent offers the perfect blend of notes: jasmine, bergamot, orange and grapefruit, with a light touch of rose, vanilla, sandalwood, patchouli, and white musk. The result is oriental, mysterious, sensual and surprisingly airy.

Coco Noir exudes femininity but it is definitively spicier, darker, deeper than Coco mademoiselle while much lighter than the original Coco. If you wish to embark on a Venetian affair, you might just have found your passport.

Chanel Coco Noir Eau de Parfum is available at Chanel counters. ($112CAD/50ml and $138CAD/100ml)
