Sometimes all you need on a Saturday afternoon is to kick back with good friends, a nice bottle of wine and delicious hors d'oeuvres. When Black Mission figs are in season, I like to put together this simple, yet scrumptious recipe. Since fresh figs season usually runs from August to October, it is nice to take plenty advantage of this sensual fruit either by eating it out-of-hand or adding it in various recipes. If you crave sweet and savory bites, the following unfussy treat will be perfect for you.
1 ultra thin pizza crust, store bought is fine
7-8 Black Mission figs
Blue cheese, preferably Roquefort or Gorgonzola
1/3 cup of wine jelly, Sauternes jelly is my favorite
A few sprigs of thyme
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place the pizza crust in the oven for 10 minutes or until warm. Slice the figs thinly and put them in a medium size bowl. Drizzle balsamic vinegar and toss gently. Remove the crust from the oven and let it rest for 2-3 minutes. Cover the centre of the crust with a thin layer of wine jelly. Distribute the fig mixture evenly on the crust. Crumble some blue cheese on top and sprinkle some thyme leaves. Cut the crust in bite size portions and voilà!
Hope you'll have a wonderful weekend!
