Chanel Haute Couture Film - Fall 2012/13

Aug 30, 2012

In a recent post, I mentioned that if I were stranded on a desert island, I would take a Chanel dress from the latest Haute Couture Collection. What was my surprise to recently discover a unique video featuring this collection, where models appear like angels in a soft glowing halo. Take a look:

This fascinating film was made by British Canadian director and photographer Trevor Undi. Also a writer, Undi has worked with Kanye West and the New York City Ballet aside from having put together other creative fashion videos.

I did not have the luxury of attending the event at the Grand Palais, but it did seems to me that Undi's film has managed to capture the magnificence of Karl Lagerfeld's work. Undi's editing is particularly brilliant. By giving his own rhythm to this runway, he seems to posses the ability of stopping time as if he wanted us to admire "l'élégance intemporelle" of Chanel.

Happy National Dog Day!

Aug 29, 2012

I have always been a cat person but recently, I have become a major dog person. I'm not quite sure how it happened, I just know it did. I am now completely fond of mischievous dogs. Here's what I mean by that...

August Peach Pride

Aug 28, 2012

As much as I like a good apple crumble in the fall, I am also fond of peach cobblers during the warmer months. It's such an easy desert to put together and it's a real crowd pleaser. I like the taste of the sweet peaches combined with the crisp crust, it's so scrumptious! I am all about the fruit in a desert, which is why I prefer to have less batter in order to really taste the juicy peaches. Here is my easy recipe:

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of brown sugar
2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/4 teaspoon of salt
3 tablespoons of butter, melted
1/2 cup of almond milk (you can also use whole milk if you prefer)
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (not vanilla essence)
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
2 cups of peeled and sliced ripped peaches (make an "X" on bottom on your peaches, blanch them in boiling water for 1 minute and quickly remove them in iced water)

Directions:

Pre-heat oven at 375F.

Melt the butter in a baking dish (8-inch square is ideal for this recipe). Distribute the sliced peaches evenly in the baking dish. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and stir well. Next, add the milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon and mix thoroughly. Pour the mixture over the peaches. Bake in the center of your oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the peach cobbler is golden brown. You can also insert a toothpick in the middle to check if it comes clean.

Serve warm with the best vanilla beans ice cream you can find and indulge!

Get Cuffed!

Aug 27, 2012
Atelier Swarovski Chainmail Rock Cuff

Move away statement necklace, now it's time to embrace the gold cuff wave!

Why? Simply because gold cuffs are effortlessly chic and make a sculptural fashion statement. Pretty versatile too, they give any day outfit a sleek modern look while adding an elegant edge to a glamorous evening attire. Try a one with clean and minimalist lines for a polished look or an embellished one for a more opulent style statement.

Enticed by the golden fever? It's perfect since in his Resort Collection 2013, Michael Kors has even push the envelope by having his models wear gold cuff on each arm. Now, that's some lavish arm candy!

Fall Envy: YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres

Aug 24, 2012

A chic new lip accessory has just arrived in stores, right in time for fall's opulent fashion. It's Yves Saint Laurent's Rouge Pur Couture Vernis à Lèvres Glossy Stain. With its luxurious gold packaging graced with the iconic red YSL letters, Yves Saint Laurent is striking big by introducing a unique product in the lip color market.

Is it a gloss, a lipstick or a lip stain? It might just be all of the above.

When first applied to the lips, the product has a wet texture similar to a lip stain. You could decide to apply only one coat for a sheer effect but I usually apply two to achieve a more intense look. At this stage, you may want to wait at least a minute before applying the second coat to let the product settle. After the second application, it's best to resist the urge to press your lips together in order to help the color melt on the lips. That's when the magic happens: the color fully reveals itself and it suddenly appears extremely glossy, without being sticky. The final result is quite impressive! It's reminds me of a creamy lipstick, it has an amazing staying power and an elegant shine, what's not to like!

Now a few words about my favorite shades. For everyday life, I am particularly fond of Corail aquatique, which is a very wearable coral with a warm pink undertone. And for a glamorous evening look, I prefer Rouge Gouache, a deep raspberry red since "Les lèvres parisiennes sont rouges ("Parisian lips are red"), as stated by YSL's Creative Director for Makeup, Lloyds Simmonds.

If you are interested to discover how the Vernis à Lèvres was put together, watch this whimsical animated short film.

And here's another interesting video explaining the various ways of experimenting with the Rouge Pur Couture:

Shoe Lust: Louboutin's Vamponodo Satin Bow Sandal

Aug 22, 2012

This is my latest shoe crush: the Christian Louboutin Vamponodo Satin Bow Sandal.

The devil is in the details as they say. The magnificent teal bow, the combination of satin and suede, the delicate black ankle strap and the iconic red sole, it doesn't get any more vampish than that?

Capturing l'Élégance

The Mainbocher Corset, Vogue, 1939

Classic fashion photographer Horst P. Horst was a key observer of the elegant lifestyle of the 30's and 40's. Through his work with French Vogue, this German-born artist captured the glamour and sophistication of his era.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces: Do you recognize the first picture? It's the shot that inspired Madonna's iconic Vogue video in 1990, which was an ode to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

"I like taking photographs, because I like life. And I love photographing people best of all, because most of all I love humanity." Horst P. Horst

Joyeux Anniversaire Coco!

Aug 18, 2012

Tomorrow will mark the birthday of the late Gabrielle Coco Chanel. In celebration of this larger than life lady, I thought I'd share a unique vintage video. If you don't pay attention to the strange music, you will discover la Grande Dame at work and some of her most iconic silhouettes.

Don't Stop Them Now!

Only the Brits could pulled this one off!

Miss England
Beauty Pageants have never been my cup of tea. But when a friend of mine sent me pictures of the latest Miss World Pageant yesterday, I was struck by the diversity of the competitors and how graceful they appeared in their elegant evening gowns.

I often feel that women who compete in such events always tend to look the same. They usually wear similar makeup, have similar hairdo, wear the same type of glittering dresses and provide similar answers during their interviews. Everything about this type of event screams pre-packaged. If only they could put forward their unique style and show us their delightful spontaneity.

Although I haven't had the opportunity of seeing them live, the standard uniformity of Beauty Pageants can't be applied to the following Miss World contestants. Isn't refreshing? Aren't they stunning and unique in their ethereal dresses?

Mademoiselle Charlotte

Aug 15, 2012

I just adore the new Gucci ad featuring Charlotte Casiraghi, the daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco. Set in a casual, yet elegant environment and photographed by Inez van Lambsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the Forever Now campaign is the second Gucci campaign for the 25-years-old Monaco Royal.

Is it surprising to see the granddaughter of the late Princess Grace of Monaco endorse a brand? Not at all, considering that Gucci is also supporting the amateur equestrian who competes in show jumping all around the world.

What do you think of this black and white campaign?

Farewell Ms. Brown

Aug 14, 2012

Helen Gurley Brown, the legendary editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, past away on Sunday at the age of 90. This charismatic 5 foot 4 woman published the bestseller "Sex and the single girl" in 1962 before taking the helm of Cosmo for 30 years where she revolutionized the magazine.

One might not agree with Cosmopolitan's general approach but cannot argue with the fact that she was a trailblazer and icon of female empowerment.

Here are a few of her most famous quotes:

"Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere".

"Nearly every glamorous, wealthy, successful career woman you might envy started out as some kind of schlepp."

"Never fail to know that if you are doing all the talking, you are boring somebody."

"Marry a decent, good, kind person who will cherish you."

Glam Swim

Aug 11, 2012

Have you seen way too many swimmers, divers and synchronized swimmers wearing the latest technical and competitive swimwear over the past few days?

Just what I thought.

I'm sure a little glamour will ease your mind. Here are some ravishing swimsuits from another era where smoking at the beach was considered elegant. Enjoy!
